Read this blog to know more:- https://osat.com/blogs/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-satellite-gps-trackersOSAT.COMThe Ultimate Guide to Satellite GPS TrackersExploring the Basics of Satellite Tracking Tracking a person or a valuable asset via satellite tracker is the ideal way of ensuring its safety while you are not around. For example, if you are heading on vacation and need a way of checking your newly purchased vehicle is where it should be at all times, a satellite tracker fitted to the vehicle will allow you to login to a centralised tracking portal and check its precise coordinates. Similarly if a loved one or you yourself is taking on a personal challenge in a remote, far-flung region, a portable satellite tracking solution is ideal for sharing your location in real-time so that people back home or online followers can monitor your progress. The Role of Iridium Edge Solar Satellite Asset Tracker When it comes to monitoring something like a boat or other marine vessel, for example, the Iridium Edge Solar satellite asset tracker is an ideal solution because of its ruggedness, mounting abilities, and the integrated solar panels that keep its internal battery charged for very long periods of time. This particular tracker has been used to great effect by OSAT customers, and when mounted to a boat’s dashboard, can log the location at various intervals set by the user. These interval tracking points are pinged to OSAT Track, our bespoke mapping portal that displays tracker locations with precision details including time, location, speed, and altitude. Iridium Edge Solar is a global satellite tracker and uses the reliable Iridium Short Burst Data service to send and receive messages anywhere in the world. GPS locations are transmitted to offer real time tracking while Bluetooth capabilities allow integration into more advanced systems for transmission of data from sensors. Choosing the Right Satellite Tracker for Your Needs Depending on what exactly you are looking to track will determine the type of tracker you need. There are two ‘camps’ of satellite tracker: asset trackers and personnel trackers. These devices vary in different ways and so the nature of your tracking needs should be considered before choosing which device to purchase. For example, if you were embarking on a solo hiking adventure through remote wilderness, we would recommend a satellite GPS tracker like a Garmin handheld, Bivy Stick, or Motorola Defy, as these can initiate things like SOS rescue operations or show you real-time route planning. For more commercial applications like fleet management or tracking shipping containers, we would suggest fitting asset trackers like the Iridium Edge Solar due to their scalability, portability, over-the-air configuration procedures, and scope for IoT integration. Common Issues in Satellite Tracking Systems with Solutions Using satellite asset trackers can be incredibly valuable for businesses and organizations looking to monitor the location and condition of their assets. However, like any technology, they come with their own set of common issues, which we outline below and provide a helpful solution for each one. Poor Signal Reception: Issue: In remote or obstructed areas, satellite signals may be weak or unavailable, leading to data gaps. Additionally, implement data validation and error-checking algorithms on the server side to filter out erroneous data. Integration Challenges: Issue: Integrating tracker data into existing systems or software can be complex. Solution: Choose trackers that offer standardized APIs for easy integration with your existing systems, or use a tracking platform that supports various data sources and provides integration options. A Buyer's Guide to Selecting the Perfect Satellite Tracker Satellite asset trackers are essential tools for anyone looking monitor and protect valuable assets from vehicles to equipment or cargo. When selecting the perfect satellite asset tracker for your specific needs, several factors should be considered to ensure you make an informed decision. This buyer's guide outlines key considerations to help you choose the right satellite asset tracker: Tracking Technology: There are different tracking technologies available, each with its advantages and limitations. The primary options are: GPS (Global Positioning System): GPS trackers are widely used and provide precise location data using signals from a network of satellites Ensure the tracker has a strong GPS signal reception and accuracy, especially in remote areas. Consider whether you need real-time or periodic tracking, as this affects the device's data plan requirements. Satellite-Based Tracking: Satellite asset trackers use satellite communication networks, such as Iridium or Globalstar, making them suitable for remote and global tracking. These trackers work in areas with limited or no cellular coverage. Ensure the device is compatible with the satellite network available in your region. Battery Life: The battery life of the asset tracker is crucial, as it determines how long the device can operate between charges or battery replacements. Consider: How frequently you need location updates and whether the device supports adjustable reporting intervals to conserve battery life. Battery type (rechargeable or replaceable) and capacity. The ability to receive low-battery alerts to prevent downtime. Durability and Environment: Asset trackers may be exposed to harsh conditions, so their durability and environmental resistance are vital: Look for trackers with rugged, weatherproof, or IP-rated designs. Factor in the cost of installation, maintenance, and potential hidden fees. By carefully considering these factors, you can choose the perfect satellite asset tracker that aligns with your organization's needs, ensuring efficient asset management and security. Make sure to conduct thorough research and even test the tracker in a real-world setting, if possible, before making a final decision. As always, our team of experts at OSAT is here to help. Read this blog to know more:- https://osat.com/blogs/blog/comparison-between-iridium-and-thuraya-satellite-phonesOSAT.COMComparison Between Iridium and Thuraya Satellite PhonesAn Overview of Iridium vs. Thuraya Satellite Phones Iridium and Thuraya are two of the most widely-known satellite network providers in the world. Each manufacturing their own brand of technology, these two satellite powerhouses offer unique satellite phone solutions that are used on a global scale. With Iridium’s global connectivity levels and Thuraya’s more unique satellite phone features, there are various differences between the two brands and their respective hardware. We will outline these as clearly as possible to help you make an informed decision. Features & Functionality Iridium If you are looking for a satellite phone that can be used anywhere on the planet, an Iridium satellite phone is your best bet. The Iridium Extreme® and Iridium 9555 are the brand’s two flagship satellite phones, and both can be used to make or take calls from any region in the world including the poles. The Iridium Extreme comes with features including SMS and email capabilities, GPS positioning, SOS, and tracking, whereas the 9555 comes with all of these features except tracking, so depending on the nature of your trip, either of these phones would work for whole spectrum of applications. Thuraya With a Thuraya satellite phone, you are looking at a handset that is much more affordable, especially in the case of the Thuraya XT LITE. Its is one of the lowest-cost handsets on the market and offers calls and text abilities, a very generous battery life, and is super simple to use so would be great in an emergency when time is potentially of the essence. Other options include the super-rugged XT PRO, designed with professionals and commercial usage in mind, and the Thuraya X5 TOUCH, perhaps one of the best satellite phones available due to its striking resemblance to a smartphone. It runs off the Android OS so is technically a smart satellite phone, and is the first of its kind available to the mass market. Connectivity and Coverage: Which Satellite Phone Performs Better? Thuraya’s network coverage is fairly limited to only EMEA and APAC regions, meaning we strongly advise against using a Thuraya phone in regions like North or South America. Thuraya phones do, however, work reliably and deliver crystal clear voice clarity when used in their relevant region, however we warn customers about this and will always ask where they plan on using their phone if they enquire about Thuraya. With Iridium, on the other hand, there is no need to worry about location because Iridium’s satellite communication service is global. This is down to the nature of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Iridium satellite constellation: it orbits earth in a mesh where there is always at least one satellite to connect to at any given moment. User Experience: Which Satellite Phone is Right for You? Depending on what you are looking for in a satellite phone, both Iridium and Thuraya’s repertoire of handsets deliver their own areas of excellent user experience. From the Thuraya X5 Touch’s 5.2” full HD LCD touchscreen offering all the familiarity of the smartphone in your pocket, to the simplistic but effective XT LITE with its clearly laid out dialing pad and confirmatory button clicks, there is a lot to be said about how easy Thuraya makes using their devices. With Iridium, however, there are zero issues in the event of dropping their devices or have heavy objects fall on them. They can be used in extreme environments from warzones to the scenes of natural disasters. Their ruggedized IP65-rated housing protects them against water jets, shocks, dust storms, and even have rugged antennas for unparalleled durability. Comparing Satellite Phone Prices: Iridium vs. Thuraya Arguably one of the main areas where Iridium satellite phones differ from Thuraya satellite phones is the price of their handsets. Because Iridium’s network coverage is global and their handsets are that bit more ruggedized, they typically sit better for those with higher budgets. With the flagship Iridium Extreme satellite phone price coming in at $1,281, Iridium airtime bundles are more expensive as well, so if you needed to apply top-ups or sign up to an Iridium monthly contract, you would be looking at handing more over compared to a Thuraya model. The Thuraya X5 Touch, for example, is nearly $170 less expensive, but remember the network coverage is more restricted too. Overall, Iridium is slightly more expensive than Thuraya, but your concerns over location usage are relieved with Iridium phones. Choosing the Best Satellite Phone for Your Needs With so many variables at play when it comes to purchasing a satellite phone, deciding which one to go for is understandably not an easy task. However, we recommend considering the nature of your trip or adventure against the key features, prices, and characteristics of the phones we offer. The location is one of the main things to consider because not all satellite phones work on a global basis. Budget needs to play a big part too because satellite phones – and their airtime – are typically more expensive than people think. Other things to consider are any weight restrictions, ease of use, ruggedness, and portability. Scrutinize your adventure as closely as possible and you should be able to draw logical conclusions on which satellite phone would work best for you. It offers voice calling, text messaging, and basic data services via Inmarsat's satellite network, ensuring connectivity even in areas with no traditional mobile coverage. Its key features include a long battery life, weather-resistant design, and a built-in GPS for location tracking and emergency response. Exploring the Increasing Importance of Satellite Phones in Various Scenarios Due to the unique capabilities and global reach of the typical satellite phone, handsets like the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 play a vital role for thousands of people in various applications including marine emergency communications, emergency response and disaster management, remote communication from isolated areas, and global travel and expeditions. Emergency Response and Disaster Management: Satellite phones are crucial during natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or wildfires, when terrestrial communication infrastructure may be damaged or overloaded. They enable emergency services and relief organisations to coordinate efforts, provide medical assistance, and communicate with affected populations. Remote and Isolated Areas: In remote regions without access to traditional cellular networks, satellite phones are essential for communication. They are commonly used by explorers, researchers, and field workers in sectors like mining, forestry, and oil and gas to stay connected when working in isolated locations. Maritime and Aviation: Satellite phones play a vital role in maritime and aviation industries. They ensure constant communication with ships at sea and aircraft in remote airspace, enhancing safety and enabling real-time updates and navigation. Global Travel and Expeditions: Travelers, adventurers, and tourists exploring remote or international destinations often rely on satellite phones for emergency calls, navigation, and staying connected with loved ones when traditional networks are unreliable or unavailable. Benefits of the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 Satellite Phone The IsatPhone 2 is one of the best satellite phones on the market, and comes with the following key benefits: Near-Global Coverage: The IsatPhone 2 provides near-global coverage, ensuring connectivity in even the most remote and isolated areas where traditional cellular networks are absent. Rugged and Durable: Designed to withstand harsh conditions, the IsatPhone 2 is rugged and weather-resistant, making it suitable for use in challenging environments, including extreme temperatures and wet conditions. Reliable Connectivity: This satellite phone utilizes Inmarsat's robust satellite network, which is known for its reliability and stability, ensuring consistent communication when needed. Emergency Services: The IsatPhone 2 features a dedicated SOS button that connects users to emergency services, providing a critical lifeline in life-threatening situations. Global Positioning System (GPS): It includes a built-in GPS receiver, enabling users to send and receive GPS coordinates, aiding in navigation, location tracking, and emergency response. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Satellite Phone Because satellite phones operate in different ways to your average cell phone, there are more things to think about before you make a purchase on your chosen handset. For example, not all models operate on a global scale, however the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 will work in any location on earth except polar regions due to the nature of the Inmarsat satellite constellation. The main other aspect we ask our OSAT customers to consider is usage times, because satellite phone airtime packages are typically more expensive than those of the everyday smartphone. Finally, choose a satellite phone that doesn’t over-cater for your needs. Some handsets come with a lot of built-in features, which are suited to some situations, but not all. The IsatPhone 2 is a brilliant all-rounder with built-in SOS, text messaging, GPS, and crystal clear voice call clarity. Understanding the Importance of Network Coverage in Your Intended Usage Area When using a satellite phone, it sometimes isn’t simply a case of turning it on, dialling a number, and hearing a voice at the other end. A lot of the time you will need a clear line of sight to the sky in order to achieve a signal. You won’t be able to use a satellite phone indoors, in steep valleys, or in cities with skyscrapers either side of you. The following other coverage area aspects are also worth considering: Connectivity Assurance: Satellite phones rely on satellite networks to establish connections. Knowing the network coverage areas ensures that you can communicate reliably in the locations you plan to visit or operate. Without this understanding, you risk being in areas where the satellite signal is weak or unavailable. Emergency Communication: In emergency situations, quick and reliable communication can be a matter of life and death. Knowing the coverage areas allows you to choose a satellite phone and network that provide the best chance of maintaining communication when emergencies arise. Operational Efficiency: For businesses, organizations, and government agencies, understanding network coverage is essential for operational efficiency. It ensures that remote personnel can effectively communicate, coordinate activities, and send critical data, improving overall productivity. Cost Management: Different satellite networks may have varying pricing structures and costs associated with usage. Knowing the coverage areas allows you to select the most cost-effective network for your specific needs and budget. Travel and Exploration Planning: Travelers, adventurers, and explorers rely on satellite phones to stay connected in remote areas. Understanding coverage areas is crucial for planning trips, routes, and expeditions, as it helps you anticipate communication challenges and make necessary preparations. Click to know more: https://osat.com/products/fastfind-returnlink-plbOSAT.COMMcMurdo ReturnLink PLBMcMurdo Fastfind ReturnLink and the ReturnLink Service (RLS) FastFind ReturnLink from McMurdo is a new type of SOS beacon offering users peace of mind that their SOS call has been received by sending back a signal to the device. When ReturnLink's blue light flashes it tells the user that their distress signal and location has been detected. FastFind ReturnLink continues the success of the existing FastFind range by offering a rugged, handheld, and waterproof (non-buoyant) GPS & Galileo enabled rescue PLB which fits in the palm of your hand. PLBs have been proven, tried and tested in some of the world's most remote locations and treacherous conditions. Even in extreme conditions and situations, the McMurdo FastFind ReturnLink activates easily. Just deploy the antenna, pull the anti-tamper seal and press the ON button. What happens when FastFind ReturnLink is activated? Upon initiation of the SOS function, the McMurdo FastFind's built-in GPS and Galileo receivers will fix your position to within a few meters and then utilize its powerful 406 MHz signal to relay your distress call to orbiting satellites. Transmits via 406 MHz to global emergency services. Receives GNSS coordinates from Galileo and GPS satellites and transmits via the 406 MHz frequency to regularly update your location - so if you are moving beyond your control, for example in a vessel, your location will be updated. Once location detection is confirmed by the emergency services the PLB will received the Galileo ReturnLink Service signal and activate the blue light - this will normally be after approximately 15 minutes. McMurdo FastFind ReturnLink Key Features: ReturnLink Service (RLS) The first of a new range of SOS beacons which can receive acknowledgement that SOS distress call and location have been received by search and rescue authorities. GPS & Galileo GNSS Receivers The McMurdo FastFind ReturnLink features dual GNSS capabilities from GPS & Galileo receivers for improved speed and accuracy of location transmission. Buoyancy The buoyancy pouch, provided with the FastFind ReturnLink, enables the PLB to float. We recommend that you keep the PLB in the pouch at all times to ensure that the PLB remains buoyant when you are at sea. Activation The FastFind ReturnLink is activated by manually deploying the antenna, pulling the anti-tamper seal and pressing the ON button, in an emergency situation. Once activated the McMurdo PLB transmits two signals simultaneously via the 406MHz professional global emergency service and the 121.5MHz homing signal to speed up local recovery. The PLB typically begins transmitting on the 406MHz frequency within 5 minutes, but can be up to 45 minutes depending on satellite coverage. The start of the 121.5 MHz secondary homing transmitter signal means that Search and Rescue teams have been deployed, they are able to home in on your exact location. Strobe Light The unit features a high-brightness LED signal light and Morse code SOS flashing light, both of which can be used to attract attention. Battery Life The McMurdo FastFind ReturnLink PLB's lithium power cell offers a minimum 24hr continuous operation and a 6-year battery storage life. Performing a full functional self-test of the PLB's internal circuitry, battery voltage & power and 406 MHz transmission gives you the peace of mind knowing your PLB will work the moment you need it the most. Subscription-Free Unlike most satellite enabled notification devices, the McMurdo FastFind ReturnLink PLB requires no monthly or annual subscription, because it does not rely on commercial call centres, meaning your request for help is received directly by Search and Rescue authorities. When triggered, the McMurdo FastFind broadcasts a unique registered distress signal that not only tells rescuers where you are, but who you are. Therefore, this is one of the most cost effective GPS enabled emergency beacons available for long term use. RLS Country Approvals At launch the RLS service will only be available for programming in certain countries. The list below are the countries that currently permit the sale of RLS-enabled beacons programmed with their country code. As additional countries allow such beacons, they will be added to the list - they will function as a normal PLB in the meantime without the RLS service. Eventually, RLS-enabled beacons will be available in most countries in the world. Permitted Countries: Croatia, Cyprus, Cyprus, Denmark, Faroe Islands (DK), France, Germany, Greece, Greenland (DK), Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom Programming your FastFind ReturnLink PLB All Personal Locator Beacons sold by OSAT are pre-programmed with the UK country code. Whilst they will function anywhere around the world, the first authority to be contacted in an emergency situation would be the UK Coastguard Agency in Falmouth with whom the PLB would be registered. Please contact us if you wish to have your PLB shipped with configuration for use in a country other than UK. This McMurdo PLB should only be used in situations of grave and imminent danger to life. False alerts endanger lives and cause expensive disruption to Search & Rescue services. Deliberate misuse of the device could result in a penalty. Please note that PLBs will not work underwater and should be used in a canister if you intend to carry at a depth exceeding the maximum depth stated in the technical specification. Register your FastFind ReturnLink PLB Registering your Personal Locator Beacon is required by law in most countries. Registering is very important because should your beacon ever be activated, it is how Search and Rescue Teams will know who you are, and contacts provided may be able to supply information about your specific travel plans. In the absence of this information, it may take longer for a search-and-rescue operation to begin. Once you have received your programmed Personal Locator Beacon, the owner is required to register their PLB with the Cospas Sarsat website to add their device to the International Beacon Registration Database (IBRD). To register your device, you must provide your unique Beacon HEX ID number, which can be found on your PLB and box. Use the links below to register your device: Country Registration: https://406registration.com/ UK customers can register at the link above, or register directly with the Maritime & Coastguard Agency: https://www.gov.uk/register-406-beacons About McMurdo McMurdo is part of the Orolia Maritime group which has utilised 406 MHz technology at the heart of it's search and rescue innovation since 1981.0 Comments 0 Shares
