AUSTIN (Nexstar) — For at first chance, the Centers for Medicare as well as Medicaid Services is spotting freestanding emergency rooms in the COVID-19 pandemic.

While freestanding ERs surrounding the state were already treating patients on Medicare as well as Medicaid, the facilities were not reimbursed by the us government for the cost associated with care.

Texas Emergency Care Facilities CEO Rhonda Sandel said the facilities were absorbing those costs for a long time. Sandel explained the recognition from CMS could make it more clear these types of patients are welcome in the freestanding facilities during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Those patients now understand that they can come to our facilities which has no worry about their caution. And it simply is the reason why we will get reimbursed for the services we provide plus the resources that we make use of, ” Sandel explained.

Sandel said using rural areas, freestanding emergency centers is the only health care facility included in a 50-mile radius.

The temporary waiver used to help during the court health emergency received bipartisan support.

In a letter composed by Representative Jodey Arrington, FOURTEEN members of Congress out of Texas signed:

Sen. Ted Cruz (R)
Rep. Brian Babin, D. VE HAD. S. (R)
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R)
Repetition. Michael Cloud (R)
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D)
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R)
Rep. Kenny Marchant (R)
Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R)
Repetition. Chip Roy (R)
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D)
Repetition. Van Taylor (R)
Repetition. Lizzie Fletcher (D)
Rep. Randy K. Weber (R)
So that they can be recognized, CMS stated freestanding ERs have some options.

Freestanding emergency centers may become affiliated with a Medicare/Medicaid-certified clinic under the temporary enlargement 1135 emergency waiver, can participate under the clinic benefit if permitted from the state, or enroll temporarily as its Medicare/Medicaid-certified hospital to provide hospital services.

“We will be applying as, under the actual temporary hospital license, that is certainly option number three. Plus it allows us to employ, we do it in the hotline, and it gives people a temporary provider license like a hospital, ” Sanel additional. “Option number one is you can actually join forces with your hospital and become part of their system and applied doing this for Medicare recognition. ”.
