Jump starter power is expressed as cold start current (CCA) or peak current (PA). Measuring CCA can tell you the expected value of the battery under the worst start-up conditions you can think of. Determine the CCA by placing a fully charged new battery in a cold environment (0 degrees Fahrenheit) and measuring the number of amps discharged in 30 seconds.
The higher the value, the stronger the jump starter. But that doesn't mean you should choose a jumper pack with the highest CCA and call it good.
There are two main factors to consider when determining the power level that is right for you.
Engine size
Small or small car batteries have jumper voltages as low as 150 CCA. Full-size trucks and SUVs require approximately 450 CCA. Engine size is important, but life is part of it.
car age
Assuming similarly sized vehicles, the older the vehicle, the more amps it takes to jump. For example, a 20-year-old 8-cylinder engine pickup requires more current to start than a brand new engine.
This is due to improvements in engine design and newer starter motors. Generally, 400-500 CCA should start most passenger cars on the road.
Remember that your car is not the only car you might want to jump into. Choose a portable starter that can also help other drivers who need help.
